Bishop Sailing Center

      Snead Island

      Lat N 027-31.50 / Long W 082-36.72

The Bishop Sailing Center, which is part of a land lease agreement with the Bradenton Yacht Club on Snead Island, is anchored by the entry “lighthouse” tower which establishes a presence on a remote part of the BYC campus. This project is replacing a fifty-year- old structure currently on campus which was unable to expand its needs due to the site and permitting constraints. The new location will provide a direct access to the Manatee River and be separated from functions of a very active Yacht Club. The process involved the development of a limited site area while establishing a positive communication interface between the Sailing Center as the user group and the BYC as the land owner. The design houses the water dependent adjacency of pram storage along with instructional, administrative and support areas to promote the fundamentals of the sport of sailing not only to the youth but to the community as a whole. Many of the details and materials are symbolic of sailing components.

The new facility, which is approximately 4000 SF with a construction cost of approximately $800K, was designed with the goal of providing a facility which will meet the needs of the community for another fifty years.
